Glass Tiles Installation Tips:

Substrate – Cement based substrate is required for wet areas such as kitchen, backsplash, bathroom and floor.

Anti fracture membranes – sometimes called crack suppression membrane helps prevent wall or substrate cracks and shifts which can translate to the glass tiles.  Cracks along the wall and floor could be resulted from earthquake, improper installed substrates, sway in load bearing walls, etc.  Use of anti fracture membrane has the ability to absorb some of the substrate movement.  It is highly recommended to apply it especially for tile with surface area larger than 2 square inch.  Most installation videos you watch on YouTube and articles you read on the internet simply ignore this very important steps.  They do not consider the possibility of wall cracks translating to the tiles.  It happens to most of the common materials like ceramic, porcelain, and stone tiles.  However, glass is particularly vulnerable due to its non porous nature which makes it relatively rigid.

Thin set – We recommend using Laticrete 254 thinset for most application.  For waterproof installation, use Laticrete Epoxy adhesive.

Grout – Non sanded grout with sealer works for most glass.  You can also use sanded grout to achieve a rustic appearance.  However, use non sanded grout if the glass can potentially be scratched.  For best performance and protection, use Laticrete Epoxy grout.  It is best for wet areas.  It is easy to clean and prevent mildew and mold from growing.

Cutting Glass Tiles:

Small size tiles can be cut using glass nippers.  Larger tile requires more skills and tools:

Straight cut – use glass scoring tool for glass thickness less than 4mm.  For thicker tiles, use wet saw with a good quality, fine diamond electroplated glass tile blade.

Drilling – use wet drill with a fine diamond electroplated coring bit.  Drill at low speed and keep drill area and bit cool.

Edge finishing – smooth the edges with a fine grit rubbing stone or a Dremel sanding device.  Keep the glass wet while sanding and smoothing.

Care and Maintenance

Most household cleaning product will do the job.   Windex or wet cloths do just fine as well.
